Night Season: Part 1
A virtual museum of night time, a nocturnal revolution.
Funded by Jerwood Arts, Tool/Toy Project undertook PrimeYARC, Great Yarmouth, to research and study our biological, emotional and economic relationships with night time.
From dusk to dawn, we pulled apart the eight segments of night to decipher what is distinct about each. Morning is distinct from afternoon, so bedtime (astronomical dusk) is distinct from the dead of night (astronomical dawn). Each phase of night has its own history, its own culture and science.
As part of our research we held a moon walk-shop, during which we made pale night guides (so we could identify eachother in the dark) and facilitated the sharing of stories and thoughts about night time wanderings.
We are building an animated digital Room that acts as a container for our research, tests and ideas. The Room is divided into eight and is presented as a panorama inspired by Max Ernst’s paiting ‘The Phases of the Night’ and his use of decalomania to create unfamiliar landscapes. The project is currently in the Research and Development phase.
