Bog Lights. Spirits of water-logged landscapes.
The projects from the week-long LT Ranch 20 residency reflected heavily upon the connections between global participants in relation to the position of the Ranch in Lithuania. This project draws upon the folklore surrounding water-logged landscapes and the comforts or dangers they present.
These pewter twinkles invite speculation, on the creatures and warnings that spring from the sinister and enigmatic landscapes of the bog, the ditch, the river bed. Inexplicable lights around watery areas have been documented and speculated on in Europe over centuries. In Lithuania the mischievous žaltvyksle guard treasures hidden beneath the peat. In Wales, the Pwca and the Tylwyth Teg (the fair family) lead travellers astray and leave them lost. These curious creatures invite those who stumble across them to attach their own meanings – warnings of pestilence, reassurances, markers, accomplices or unwelcome presences. The characters now inhabit the watery world of the Ranch, to be happened upon by weary wanderers.
